A trader purchased two colour televisions for a total of Rs. 35000. He sold one colour television at 30% profit and the other 40% profit. Find the difference in the cost prices of the two televisions if he made an overall profit of 32%?
Correct answer: A. Rs. 21000
- A. Rs. 21000
- B. Rs. 17500
- C. Rs. 19000
- D. Rs. 24500
Explanation
Let the cost prices be x rupees and y rupees, so x + y = 35000 rupees. The total profit is 32% of 35000 rupees = 11200 rupees, giving 0.30x + 0.40y = 11200; subtracting 0.30(x + y) = 10500 gives 0.10y = 700, so y = 7000 rupees and x = 28000 rupees. The difference is 28000 - 7000 = 21000 rupees. A student may choose 17500 rupees by incorrectly treating the two televisions as having equal cost prices.
