Pak Army Officer Non-Verbal Intelligence Test
Every Army commission, from technical cadet and graduate courses to short service and professional entries, begins with the initial tests at an Army Selection and Recruitment Centre: verbal and non-verbal intelligence tests first, then the academic test the entry requires.
The non-verbal intelligence test is made of figures instead of words. Shapes turn, move round a box, gain or lose parts and change their shading from one figure to the next, and each question asks which figure follows the rule, completes the pattern or breaks it.
What the Pak Army Officer non verbal intelligence test asks
Which figure comes next in the series?
Which figure completes a three by three pattern?
The first figure changes into the second; which figure does the third change into?
Three figures share a rule; find the one that does not.
How the figure looks in a mirror standing beside it.
How the figure looks reflected in water below it.
Which option is the same figure turned through a quarter or half turn.
The academic subjects differ by entry, but the intelligence tests are shared by all of them, and so is ISSB after them.
Sample Pak Army Officer non verbal intelligence test questions with answers
1. The first figure changes into the second by a rule. Which figure does the third change into by the same rule?
- A. Half-shaded triangle pointing right at middle left; hexagon at top right
- B. Half-shaded triangle pointing down at middle left; hexagon at top right
- C. Solid triangle pointing right at middle left; hexagon at top right
- D. Half-shaded triangle pointing right at middle right; hexagon at top right
The semicircle and arrow remain in place from A to B, but each turns 90 degrees clockwise. The triangle and hexagon in C therefore turn in place by the same amount. Option A shows both rotations correctly.
Discuss this question2. The first figure changes into the second by a rule. Which figure does the third change into by the same rule?
- A. Half-shaded star, shaded up-right at top centre; solid arrow pointing right at bottom right; hexagon at top left
- B. Half-shaded star, shaded up-right at middle right; solid arrow pointing right at bottom right; hexagon at top left
- C. Half-shaded star, shaded down-left at top centre; solid arrow pointing right at bottom right; hexagon at top left
- D. Half-shaded star, shaded up-right at top centre; solid arrow pointing right at bottom centre; hexagon at top left
The top-left element moves to middle-left, the bottom-right element moves to middle-right, and the middle-left element moves to bottom-left. This is one counterclockwise step around the outside. Applying that step to C produces option A.
Discuss this question3. The first figure changes into the second by a rule. Which figure does the third change into by the same rule?
- A. Half-shaded hexagon, shaded left at top centre; solid semicircle pointing right at bottom left
- B. Half-shaded hexagon, shaded right at top centre; solid semicircle pointing left at bottom left
- C. Half-shaded hexagon, shaded left at top centre; solid semicircle pointing down at bottom left
- D. Solid hexagon at top centre; solid semicircle pointing right at bottom left
The triangle changes from up to a left-facing orientation, and the arrow changes from right-facing to up-facing. Thus each shape turns 90 degrees anticlockwise without moving or changing shade. Applying this to C gives option A.
Discuss this question4. The first figure changes into the second by a rule. Which figure does the third change into by the same rule?
- A. Arrow pointing right at bottom centre; solid circle at top right
- B. Solid arrow pointing right at bottom centre; circle at top right
- C. Arrow pointing right at middle right; solid circle at top right
- D. Arrow pointing left at bottom centre; solid circle at top right
The star moves from tl to br and changes from none to solid. The pentagon moves from mr to ml and keeps its half fill. In C, the arrow goes from tc to bc and changes to none, while the circle goes from bl to tr and changes to solid, giving option A.
Discuss this question5. The first figure changes into the second by a rule. Which figure does the third change into by the same rule?
- A. Arrow pointing left at top left; solid pentagon at bottom centre; half-shaded semicircle pointing right at middle right
- B. Arrow pointing left at top left; solid pentagon at bottom centre; solid semicircle pointing right at middle right
- C. Arrow pointing left at top right; solid pentagon at bottom centre; half-shaded semicircle pointing right at middle right
- D. Arrow pointing right at top left; solid pentagon at bottom centre; half-shaded semicircle pointing right at middle right
From A to B, tl moves to bl, mr moves to tc, and bc moves to mr. At the same time, every shape turns anticlockwise and its fill swaps between none and solid, while half remains unchanged. Applying all three changes to C produces option A.
Discuss this questionHow to prepare for the Pak Army Officer non verbal intelligence test
- Whatever your entry, prepare the intelligence tests as the gate. A strong academic score does not help if the intelligence tests end the day first.
- Track one change at a time. Ask what each shape does between two figures: does it turn, and by how much; does it move, and which way; does its shading change; does it appear or vanish?
- Rule options out rather than looking for the answer. Once one rule is clear, most options break it, and only one or two are left to check against the next rule.
- For mirror images, left and right swap and top and bottom stay. For water images, top and bottom swap and left and right stay. A quarter turn clockwise moves the top of the figure to its right side.
- Practise against the clock. Figure questions are quick once the common rules are familiar, and familiarity only comes from volume.
