How do you plan a year of CSS preparation?
The short answer
A year is enough if it is ordered by where the examination is failed rather than by the syllabus. Months one to three: English first, with a weekly timed essay and precis from the start, alongside the current-affairs file and the first optional. Months four to six: the compulsory content papers built from the file, the second and third optionals, the MPT sat and passed in the middle of this block, writing continuing weekly. Months seven to nine: remaining optionals, full past papers under time, the error count per page falling. Months ten to twelve: revision, two full mock cycles of all twelve papers, then the examination. The written result comes months later; the gap is for optionals at viva depth, the district file and mock interviews. Three rules hold throughout: writing every week from month one, one current-affairs file that feeds four papers, and the weakest compulsory paper always ahead of the strongest optional.
What are the principles behind the order?
- The examination is failed on Essay and Precis, so English writing starts in week one and never stops. Twelve months of weekly timed essays is about fifty essays; that is what moves a script from 35 to 55.
- The pass rule is per paper, so the target is a safe 50 in every compulsory paper before any optional is polished. A brilliant International Relations paper cannot rescue a 38 in Essay.
- One reading feeds four papers. A daily newspaper and a monthly digest, filed under headings, serve Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs' contemporary questions, the Essay and the overlapping optionals. Building the file is a daily task from month one.
- Optionals with overlap go first. International Relations, Political Science, Governance and the like are built from the same file; a science or language optional stands alone and goes later.
- The MPT is sat in the middle of the year, and its preparation is the recall base for the objective parts of the written papers, not a detour.
Months one to three: English, the file, and the first optional

The writing method for both English papers is in CSS Essay and Precis. By the end of month three the error count per page should be under five and the file should have a heading for every live issue.
Months four to six: content papers, the MPT, two more optionals
Sit the MPT prepared
Six weeks of daily timed sections across all seven MPT areas, from the MPT practice page, fitted around the rest. The plan is in CSS MPT preparation. Passing it is the gate to everything else.
Build Current Affairs and Pakistan Affairs from the file
Turn each heading in the file into an analytical answer under time: judgement, headed argument, recent evidence, conclusion. Two a week, marked. The paper formats are in CSS compulsory papers explained.
Prepare General Science and Ability's two halves
The ability half daily for thirty minutes from Mathematics and Analytical Reasoning; the science half by topic from Everyday Science, with a paragraph of explanation written for each.
Add the second and third optionals
The overlapping ones. Ninety minutes a day each, alternating; one full answer a week from each.
Keep the weekly essay and precis
Without exception. This is the block in which candidates drop the writing to make room, and it is the block in which the Essay fail is decided.
Months seven to nine: remaining optionals and full papers
- The remaining optionals, including any standalone science or language paper, at ninety minutes a day each, with one full answer a week.
- Islamic Studies built to the same analytical standard: references applied, contemporary issues argued. Recall from the Islamic Studies bank.
- Full past papers under time, one a week, rotating through all twelve. Marked against the pass mark; the weakest paper gets the next week's extra hours.
- The essay error count should be under three per page by month nine. If it is not, English hours go up and an optional's hours come down.
- Optional choice reviewed once. If an optional is scoring under 40 in practice after three months, this is the last point to change it. The four tests are in choosing CSS optional subjects.
Months ten to twelve: revision and mock cycles
Two full mock cycles
All twelve papers on the real timetable, two weeks each, with a week between. Marked; the aggregate and every paper checked against the pass rules.
Revision from your own notes and file
Not new reading. The file, the optional notes, the marked essays with their corrections.
Current affairs to the examination date
The last three months' events are the most likely to be asked. Keep filing to the week before.
Taper
No new material in the final week; sleep; the timetable of the examination printed and the centre visited.
After the written examination: the months before the viva
- Optionals to conversation depth. The current debates, not the syllabus.
- The district and background file. History, economy, administration, problems.
- The services. What each group you ranked does, where it sits, its current issues.
- Daily news with a position. Two sentences of summary, one of recommendation.
- Mock interviews with follow-ups, in both languages, recorded.

What changes if you are working, or on a second attempt?
- Working candidates keep the same order at two to three hours on weekdays and six at weekends, over eighteen months instead of twelve. The weekly essay moves to the weekend and is never skipped. The MPT is sat at the first opportunity so that the written-examination year is clear.
- A second attempt starts from the marks sheet. A fail in a compulsory paper means that paper gets the first three months exclusively. A fail in an optional means that optional is replaced. An aggregate fail with every paper passed means writing quality across the board, and the essay programme runs for the whole year. Repeating the first year's plan unchanged is how second attempts are lost.
