How do you prepare for the CSS MPT?
The short answer
The MPT is a 200-MCQ screening test in 200 minutes, held a few months before the written examination, with a pass mark of 33 per cent and no negative marking; only candidates who pass may apply for the written papers. For CSS Competitive Examination-2027, FPSC held the MPT on 27 September 2026 in 19 cities, under the CSS CE Rules, 2019. The sections are English (vocabulary, grammar, comprehension), General Abilities (basic mathematics, logical reasoning, analytical and mental ability), Islamic Studies or Comparative Religion, Urdu, Pakistan Affairs, Current Affairs of Pakistan and the world, and General Science, with the exact split published in each year's FPSC notification. The pass mark is low and the paper is broad, so it is failed by candidates who are strong in three sections and blank in four, and by candidates who have never sat 200 questions against a clock. Six weeks of daily timed practice across every section, weighted to English and general abilities, is enough for most graduates.

Create an account and fill the form
Use the 'Apply Online' link on www.fpsc.gov.pk: create an account, log in, complete or update your profile and fill in the MPT-2027 application form. Enter your CNIC and date of birth correctly; wrong entries lead to rejection.
Generate the PSID and pay Rs. 250
Generate the 16-digit PSID and pay through 1-Link: an ATM, a mobile banking app such as Easypaisa or JazzCash, internet banking, or over the counter at any 1-Link member bank. Fee paid on the old FPSC challan (TR-6), or by cheque, bank draft or pay order, is not accepted.
Log in again and complete the application
After paying, log in again through 'Apply Online' and enter the remaining details. The examination centre cannot be changed once selected.
Admission is provisional
Under Rules 11(20) and 11(21), candidates are admitted provisionally and at their own risk. A candidate found ineligible at any stage has their candidature cancelled, even after qualifying the entire process, so check every eligibility requirement before applying.
Why do graduates fail a test with a 33 per cent pass mark?
- Blank sections. A candidate from a science background who ignores Urdu and Islamic Studies, or an arts graduate who skips the mathematics, gives away a quarter of the paper. Sixty-six marks is comfortable only if every section contributes.
- Pace. Two hundred questions in 200 minutes with no breaks is a stamina test that most candidates have never sat. Untimed preparation produces a candidate who runs out of time with forty questions unread.
- Preparing from the written syllabus. The MPT is factual recall and technique, not analysis. Reading essays on current affairs does not answer "who is the current Secretary-General of the UN".
- Vocabulary. The English section leans on synonyms, antonyms and idioms, which are a finite list and the single most improvable part of the test.
What is a six-week plan?
Week one: baseline across all seven sections
Sit a timed 200-question mock on day one and score each section. The two lowest sections are where the next five weeks go. Use the MPT practice page, which draws every section from one bank, timed, with every answer explained.
Weeks two and three: fill the blank sections, daily vocabulary
Thirty minutes a day on the weakest section from recall-level MCQs, reading every explanation. Fifteen minutes a day on English vocabulary and idioms. One timed set of general abilities daily, because reasoning technique is the fastest gain on the paper.
Weeks four and five: current affairs and full sections under the clock
Build the last eighteen months of current affairs from a monthly digest and the current affairs bank. Sit a timed 50-question section every day, rotating through the seven.
Week six: two full mocks and rest
Two 200-question mocks under conditions, marked by section. Correct the pattern, not the questions. Stop new material three days before the test.
The MPT is also the written examination's objective parts
General Science and Ability and Islamic Studies both carry MCQ portions in the written examination, and the current affairs and Pakistan Affairs facts recur in the essays. MPT preparation is not wasted once the MPT is passed; it is the factual base the written papers stand on.
How do you sit 200 questions in 200 minutes?
- Two passes. First pass: answer everything you know at once and mark the rest. Second pass: the marked questions, in order of confidence. Never spend three minutes on one question in the first pass.
- Fill the answer sheet as you go, not at the end. Transfer errors under time pressure are the commonest avoidable loss.
- Answer every question. There is no negative marking, so a blank scores nothing and a guess can score; in the last five minutes, fill every unanswered circle.
- Do the strongest section first if the paper allows movement between sections, to bank marks and settle nerves.
