The Z-scheme is a graphical representation of the electron transport pathway in non-cyclic photophosphorylation. It is called the Z-scheme because the pathway resembles the letter Z.The Z-scheme shows the movement of electrons from water to NADP+, with the help of a series of electron carriers. As the electrons move down the pathway, they release energy, which is used to pump protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This creates a proton gradient, which drives the synthesis of ATP by the enzyme ATP synthase.
