Predict which one of the following metal hydroxide is least soluble in water?

Correct answer: D. Ca(OH)2

  • A. Sr(OH)2
  • B. Mg(OH)2
  • C. Ba(OH)2
  • D. Ca(OH)2

Explanation

The solubility of alkaline earth metal hydroxides in water increases down the group. Be(OH)2 is quite insoluble. Mg(OH)2 is sparingly soluble while Ba (OH)2 is more soluble. This increase in solubility is due to low lattice energy of hydroxides which is, in turn, due to higher ionic size. Since Ca(OH2) has smaller size and higher lattice energy so it is least soluble.

About Reactions of Group II Elements

Group II reactions cover the behaviour of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium with water, oxygen, halogens, acids and nitrogen. The trends in reactivity, hydroxide solubility and basicity, along with the thermal decomposition of carbonates and nitrates, depend on increasing atomic size down the group.
