Task 2 · 40 minutes · at least 250 words
An increasing number of people now work from home rather than travelling to an office. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Spell check is turned off deliberately, because it is off in the real test. Your essay stays in this browser and is never uploaded.
How to plan this one
- 1Notice the word "outweigh". This is not a request to list both sides evenly. It asks you to weigh them, so the essay must reach a verdict and the verdict must be visible in the introduction.
- 2Choose the side with the stronger arguments, not the side you personally prefer. You are not being marked on sincerity.
- 3Give the losing side real weight anyway. An essay that dismisses the other side in one sentence looks like it could not think of anything, which costs Task Response.
- 4Keep one paragraph per side, then use the conclusion to say why one column is heavier. Do not introduce a new argument there.
Model answer
Written at the top of the band. Read it for the moves it makes, not the opinions it holds: a memorised essay on this topic will not fit the prompt you actually get.
The shift away from the daily commute has been one of the more durable changes to working life in the past decade. It brings genuine costs as well as benefits, but on balance I consider the advantages the greater, chiefly because of what commuting takes from people that nothing gives back.
The clearest gain is time. A worker in Karachi or Lahore can spend two hours a day travelling, which amounts to roughly ten working weeks a year spent sitting in traffic. Recovered, that time goes to family, rest or study, and the effect on wellbeing is immediate. There is a second benefit that is easy to overlook: employers recruiting remotely are no longer limited to candidates who live within driving distance, so a qualified graduate in Quetta can take a job that would once have required moving to another city.
Against this stands the erosion of everything an office does apart from providing desks. Junior staff learn by watching colleagues solve problems, and that transfer happens in overheard conversations rather than scheduled calls. Isolation is a real cost too, particularly for workers living alone, and the boundary between work and home dissolves in a way that lengthens the working day rather than shortening it.
These disadvantages are serious, but they differ from the advantages in one important respect: they can be mitigated. A company can bring teams together weekly, pair new staff with mentors and set rules about hours. The commute cannot be mitigated. It is a fixed loss, paid every day, by everyone.
That asymmetry is what decides the question for me. The benefits of remote work are structural, while its costs are largely manageable with deliberate effort.
Why it scores, criterion by criterion
Task Response
The verdict appears in the introduction and the whole essay is built to support it. Crucially, the conclusion does not restate the two sides: it identifies the reason one outweighs the other, which is the actual question. The disadvantages are argued properly rather than set up to be knocked down.
Coherence and Cohesion
Progression is carried by the argument itself. "Against this stands" turns the essay without a mechanical connective, and the fourth paragraph opens by conceding before it pivots. The word "asymmetry" in the conclusion names the relationship the previous paragraph demonstrated, tying the two together.
Lexical Resource
Precise, low-frequency choices that fit their context: "durable", "erosion", "mitigated", "structural", "asymmetry". Note that "work from home" is paraphrased as "the shift away from the daily commute" and "remote work" rather than repeated. Collocation is accurate throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A deliberate range: a fronted adverbial ("Against this stands..."), a relative clause carrying the mentoring point, a colon used correctly, and two short emphatic sentences at the end for contrast. The short closing sentences are a control device, not a lapse.
Language worth stealing
Each of these carries a trap as well as a use, so the note matters as much as the phrase.
- on balance I consider ... the greater
- States a verdict without the flat "I think". Use it in the introduction of any outweigh question.
- Against this stands ...
- Turns the essay to the other side without "On the other hand". Inverted word order, so check the verb agrees with what follows.
- they differ in one important respect
- Sets up a comparison that decides the question. This is how you weigh rather than list.
- easy to overlook
- Introduces a less obvious point and signals that you are thinking, not reciting.
