How does Pakistan Navy officer selection work?

The short answer

Pakistan Navy officer selection follows the same shape as the other services: registration for an advertised course, initial tests at a Navy recruitment and selection centre (intelligence tests, then an academic test in the subjects your branch requires), a preliminary medical and interview at the centre, ISSB, and a final medical and merit before training at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi. Branches include Operations, Marines, Weapon Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply, Education and others, each advertised with its own eligibility; the Operations branch is the surface and sub-surface equivalent of the Army's regular commission and the most competitive. The initial tests eliminate most of the field and are the part preparation changes most.

What are the stages?

  1. Registration

Online on the official Navy induction portal against an advertised course, or at a recruitment and selection centre. You receive a slip and a date for the tests.

  2. Initial tests at the centre

Intelligence tests, verbal and non-verbal, then the academic test for your branch, timed and on computer. Results at the centre; candidates who do not clear go home.

  3. Preliminary medical and interview

Height, weight, vision, a general examination and a short interview at the centre. Candidates with a disqualifying condition learn it here.

  4. ISSB

The four-day board common to all three services, at Kohat, Gujranwala, Karachi or Quetta. Day by day, in what happens at ISSB.

  5. Final medical and merit

Recommended candidates have a full medical at a naval hospital. Naval Headquarters prepares the merit from the ISSB result, the medical and the academic record, and issues call-ups against vacancies.

  6. Training

Cadets begin at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, with further professional training by branch, before commissioning.

What is in the Navy initial test?

  • Intelligence tests. Verbal series, analogies, coding and relationships; non-verbal figure series and pattern completion. Timed and heavy on volume. Practise on Analytical Reasoning.
  • Academic test. Multiple choice at intermediate level in the subjects your branch requires: English, Mathematics, Physics for the operations and engineering entries, with General Knowledge and Pakistan Studies across entries.

Timed practice on the Pakistan Navy page uses the initial-test subject split, from one bank, free, with every answer explained.

How do you prepare?

  • Daily timed intelligence practice for a month before the centre date. The intelligence tests are the gate.
  • Revise intermediate Mathematics, Physics and English by topic, then timed.
  • Sort the medical early, particularly vision and weight, and read the standard for your branch.
  • Swim. Not tested at the centre, but the Academy will expect it and it is one less thing to learn under pressure.
  • Begin ISSB preparation as soon as you clear the centre. The six-week plan is in how to prepare for ISSB, and the interview questions that come up for Navy candidates specifically, on ships, the fleet and why the sea, are of the kind covered in the ISSB interview.

What is in the Pakistan Navy initial test?

Verbal and non-verbal intelligence tests, then an academic test in the subjects your branch requires, usually English, Mathematics and Physics for operations and engineering entries with general knowledge across entries, timed and taken on computer at a recruitment and selection centre.

Does the Navy use ISSB?

Yes. Candidates who clear the initial tests and preliminary medical are called to the same four-day Inter Services Selection Board used by the Army and the Air Force.

Where is the Pakistan Naval Academy?

In Karachi, where cadets begin training after final selection, followed by professional training according to branch.

Which Navy branch is the most competitive?

The Operations branch, the general cadet entry that leads to command at sea, attracts the most applicants for the fewest places. Engineering and specialist entries have their own, often smaller, fields with degree-based eligibility.
