How do you pass the CA PRC papers, especially Quantitative Methods and Accounting?

The short answer

PRC papers are objective and computer-marked, so only the answer counts and every question is a small, exact task under time. That decides the method. For Quantitative Methods and Introduction to Accounting: work questions from the first week, build a one-page formula and adjustment sheet per chapter, and drill each computation until it is mechanical; reading the study text without solving is how these two are failed. For Economics and Introduction to Business: read the study text closely, keep a term list with exact definitions, and do the objective questions chapter by chapter, because the questions test the terms. For Business Writing: learn grammar as rules and drill sentence correction, and read business documents for their conventions. On the day: two passes through the paper, flagging rather than dwelling, and check the marking rule before guessing. Students who pass at the first sitting are not cleverer; they solved more questions.

What does the objective format change about preparation?

  • No method marks. In a written paper a correct method with a slip earns most of the marks; in PRC it earns nothing. Accuracy is the skill, and accuracy is built by repetition.
  • Breadth over depth. An objective paper samples the whole syllabus in many small questions. A chapter left out is a guaranteed loss; a chapter known moderately across the whole syllabus passes.
  • Time is per question. A minute or so each. Practising untimed produces a candidate who knows the method and runs out of time.
  • The bank is the textbook. For PRC, the chapter-wise question banks with explanations are a better use of an hour than rereading a chapter, because they show the form the examiner asks in.

Quantitative Methods: how do you make formulas automatic?

  1. One page per chapter

Formulas, with what each symbol means and one worked example. Compound interest, annuity and NPV formulas; the quadratic formula; mean, variance and standard deviation for grouped data; the binomial, Poisson and normal; correlation and regression coefficients. Twelve pages for the paper.

  2. Ten questions a day per chapter, timed, from week one

From Quantitative Methods. Read the explanation on every wrong answer and add the trap to the chapter page.

  3. Calculator drills

Know your calculator's memory, power, root and statistical functions cold. A candidate who computes standard deviation by hand runs out of time.

  4. Financial mathematics gets double time

It is the largest share of marks and the chapter arts and commerce students find newest. Discounting, annuities and NPV should be reflex by the end of month one.

  5. Statistics last, as a block

Data presentation through sampling is coherent and builds; do it in sequence over three weeks rather than scattered.

Introduction to Accounting: how do you drill the adjustments?

  1. Double entry until it is instinct

Every question depends on knowing which account is debited and which credited. Two weeks of nothing but journal entries and ledger postings from the double entry and ledger chapters before anything else.

  2. One adjustment at a time

Accruals and prepayments; then depreciation and disposals; then doubtful debts; then inventory; then errors and suspense. Each is a small set of patterns; drill each until the closing figure is right every time.

  3. The final accounts as assembly

Once the adjustments are mechanical, the financial statements of a sole trader are assembly. Practise from a trial balance with five adjustments, timed.

  4. Control accounts and incomplete records together

Both are the same skill: reconstruct a missing figure from what is known. The bank reconciliation and control account and incomplete records chapters are best done as a pair.

  5. Partnerships as the last chapter

Appropriation and current accounts are a variation on what is already known. A week.

Economics and Introduction to Business: how do you prepare a conceptual paper?

  • Read the study text, not a summary. Objective questions on these papers are set from the text's definitions and distinctions, and a summary loses exactly the distinctions that are examined.
  • Keep a term list per chapter with the exact definition: elasticity types, market structures, forms of organisation, leadership theories, the directors' duties. Most questions test whether you know the term.
  • Do the numerical economics questions separately: elasticity, national income identities, the multiplier. They are few and predictable.
  • Objective questions chapter by chapter from Economics and Introduction to Business, reading the explanations, which say which distinction the question turned on.
  • Pair each with a harder paper in the same session; they need less time and steady the session.

Business Writing: how do you prepare English as rules?

  • Grammar as a syllabus: tenses, agreement, articles, prepositions, voice, reported speech, conditionals, punctuation. One rule a day with twenty sentence-correction items from Business Writing and English.
  • Vocabulary daily: synonyms, antonyms, confused pairs, business terms. Fifteen minutes.
  • Comprehension under time: a passage a day, answering main idea, detail and inference questions in the time the paper allows.
  • Document conventions: the parts of a business letter, email, memo and report; the order of a summary; the register for each. Examined as objective questions about the form.

How do you sit an on-screen objective paper?

  1. Read the instructions and the marking rule

How many items, the time, whether wrong answers are penalised, and how multiple-response items are scored. It decides whether you guess.

  2. First pass: answer what you know, flag the rest

Do not spend three minutes on one computation. The flag function exists for it.

  3. Second pass: flagged items in order of confidence

Numerical items first if you are strong at them, conceptual first if not.

  4. Check the arithmetic on the numerical items you changed

The commonest lost marks are a right method with a slip, and the second pass is when slips are caught.

  5. Use the whole time

There is no reward for finishing early and there is always an item to check.

Which papers to sit together, and a session-by-session plan, are in the CA PRC study plan. Each paper's syllabus is in PRC explained.

How do I pass PRC Quantitative Methods?

Work questions from the first week, timed, chapter by chapter; build a one-page formula sheet per chapter with a worked example; learn your calculator's functions; give financial mathematics double time; and do statistics as a sequential block. The paper is failed by reading and passed by solving.

How do I pass PRC Introduction to Accounting?

Two weeks of double entry until it is instinct, then one adjustment at a time (accruals, depreciation, doubtful debts, inventory, errors) drilled until the closing figure is exact every time, then final accounts from a trial balance with adjustments under time. Objective questions offer distractors one adjustment apart, so exactness is the skill.

Should I read the study text or do questions for PRC?

Both, in different proportions by paper. Quantitative Methods and Accounting are mostly questions with the text as reference; Economics and Introduction to Business are the text read closely with a term list, then chapter-wise objective questions; Business Writing is grammar rules with daily drills.

Is there negative marking in PRC?

Check ICAP's current examination regulations and the instructions on the paper; the rule for wrong answers and for multiple-response items is stated there and decides whether to guess on the second pass.

How many hours a day for PRC preparation?

Three to four focused hours a day for two or three papers per session, with most of the time on solving questions under time and the rest on the study text and term lists. Students who pass first time are the ones who solved more questions, not the ones who read more.
