Asked in PMC Practice Test 36 (2021) 2021

Which pair shows hydrogen bonding among them?

Correct answer: C. Acetone and Chloroform

  • A. Ammonia and Carbon
  • B. Acetone and Kerosene
  • C. Acetone and Chloroform
  • D. Water and Neon

Explanation

There exists hydrogen bonding between Acetone and Chloroform. The three Chlorine atoms in Chloroform deprived the carbon atom of its electrons and the partial positively charged hydrogen can form a strong hydrogen bond with the oxygen atom of acetone. Hydrogen bonding between Chloroform and Acetone is evident in the figure:

About Hydrogen Bonding

Hydrogen bonding is the strong attraction between hydrogen attached to nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine and an electronegative atom in the same or another molecule. It explains unusual boiling points, viscosity, surface tension, water's properties and the difference between intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
