Which of the following compounds will not give iodoform test on treatment with I2/NaOH:

Correct answer: D. 3-pentanone

  • A. Acetaldehyde
  • B. Acetone
  • C. 2-pentanone
  • D. 3-pentanone

Explanation

The haloform reaction using iodine and aqueous sodium hydroxide is called the iodoform test. It results in the formation of water insoluble iodoform which is a yellow solid. Iodoform test is used for distinguishing methyl ketones from other ketones. It is also used to distinguish ethanol from methanol and other primary alcohols. It can be used to distinguish acetaldehyde from other aldehydes.

About Aldehydes and Ketones

Aldehydes and ketones contain the polar carbonyl group, but aldehydes are generally more readily oxidised and more reactive than ketones. Coverage includes preparation by oxidation or reduction routes, nucleophilic addition of reagents such as hydrogen cyanide and bisulfite, and tests that distinguish aldehydes from ketones.
