Which of the curves on the graph below best represents the vertical component "vy" of the velocity versus the time t for a projectile fired at an angle of 45o above the horizontal?

Correct answer: D. AE

  • A. OC
  • B. AB
  • C. DE
  • D. AE

Explanation

During a projectile motion the vertical component of velocity, changes with time, and is zero at the maximum height. Since line AE shows zero velocity at the midpoint where the maximum height is attained this line is correct. The velocity first decreases then it increases (in the opposite direction), and the acceleration is constant throughout, producing a straight line of negative gradient. The figure below shows the position-time graph for the projectile. The "OP" portion represents the "AH" portion of the graph and "PA" represents "HE", with zero velocity at point H which is the maximum height point P.

About Force and Motion

Displacement, velocity and acceleration describe motion, including the horizontal and vertical components of projectile motion. The chapter connects these quantities with Newton's laws, momentum and impulse, then applies conservation of momentum to collisions, distinguishing elastic collisions from inelastic ones.
