Explanation

Due to high metabolic activity at the tissue level, there is an accumulation of CO2. The CO2 reacts with H2O in the erythrocytes to form H2CO3. This splits to produce H+ and HCO3- ions. As the blood becomes more acidic, due to the presence of H+, hemoglobin buffers it by releasing oxygen to the tissues and binding H+ to form HHb. Thus, acidic blood decreases the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen and favors the dissociation of oxyhemoglobin.
