The reverse process of pair production is called:

Correct answer: A. Pair Annihilation

  • A. Pair Annihilation
  • B. Compton effect
  • C. Photoelectric effect
  • D. None of the above

Explanation

The annihilation of matter is the opposite of pair production. In pair production, photon energy is changed into an electron-positron pair (a positron is an antiparticle of an electron that is it has the same mass but an equal opposite charge), the interaction usually takes place in an electric field in the vicinity of a heavy nucleus. Whereas in annihilation when a positron comes in close to an electron they annihilate or destroy each other the matter of two particles is changed into electromagnetic energy producing 2 photons.

About Dawn of Modern Physics

Classical physics cannot explain blackbody radiation and related observations, leading to Planck’s quantum theory, in which energy is emitted or absorbed in discrete packets. Photons provide the particle model of light, with energy and momentum linked to frequency and wavelength, including the photoelectric effect and its threshold frequency.
