Identify which one of the following has the highest boiling point

Correct answer: A. 1-Butanol

  • A. 1-Butanol
  • B. 2-Butanol
  • C. 2-Methyl-2- Propanol
  • D. 1- Propanol

Explanation

Melting and boiling points of alcohols are higher than corresponding alkanes. Methyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol are liquids while methane and ethane are gases. This is also due to hydrogen bonding which is present in alcohols but absent in alkanes.Generally, boiling point of primary alcohols is greater than that of secondary alcohol which is greater than that of tertiary alcohols. The boiling point also increases with increasing number of carbon atoms hence 1-butanol has highest boiling point.

About Alcohols

Alcohols contain a hydroxyl group attached to a saturated carbon atom and are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary. Their nomenclature, hydrogen bonding, acidity, oxidation, dehydration, reaction with sodium and conversion to haloalkanes are covered, along with the distinction between alcohols and phenols, where the hydroxyl group is attached directly to an aromatic ring.
