Histamine is produced by which one of the following cells

Correct answer: A. Basophils

  • A. Basophils
  • B. Platelets
  • C. Monocyte
  • D. Eosinophils

Explanation

Histamine is synthesized primarily by mast cells, basophils, histaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia of the brain, and enterochromaffin-like cells (ECL) in the stomach. These cells produce large amounts of histamine and are thought to be the major histamine-producing cells. Histamine is released from cells in response to an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). This antibody may be secreted in response to an invading pathogen such as a virus, or bacteria, or an allergenic substance such as pollen. Histamine can also be released in response to injury caused by toxins.

About Specific Defense Mechanism

Specific defense mechanisms provide targeted immunity through B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, antibodies and memory cells that recognize particular antigens. Questions cover humoral and cell mediated responses, clonal selection, primary and secondary immune responses, vaccination and passive immunity, while distinguishing adaptive defenses from the immediate, non specific innate response.
