Gaseous exchange in humans takes place primarily through the process of diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of gases (such as oxygen and carbon dioxide) from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This process occurs at the respiratory surfaces, which are specialized structures in the lungs known as the alveoli.During inhalation, fresh air containing a higher concentration of oxygen is taken into the lungs where it comes into contact with the thin walls of the alveoli. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the surrounding capillaries, which have a lower concentration of oxygen. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide, which has a higher concentration in the capillaries due to cellular metabolism, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled during exhalation.
